Does the snow have you longing for skates and a stick? We talked to a local father who has maintained his own backyard rink every winter.

Derek Fehr is the father of three boys. Three Canadian boys. Winter can be a cold and lonely time, and having three boys stuck inside the house with nowhere to go can drive you insane. So Fehr did what every true Canadian family wants to do: he built a backyard rink.

Fehr has a few tips for those parents looking to set up their own backyard winter paradise.

"You want to have as level of a surface as possible," Fehr started.

Fehr says he gets the plywood boards set up all around then line it with a polyethylene liner. He says the liner gives you a good first freeze which makes it much easier.

"Use a good steel edge shovel [to get snow off]," Fehr said about maintaining the rink during the year.

He also developed his own type of Zamboni using PVC pipe with holes. Fehr uses hot water as well to get the best freeze.
