Manitoba drivers who have insured vehicles will be receiving rebate cheques in the mail shortly, if they haven't already received one.

Some drivers have already started to receive the promised cheque, in varying amounts.

As MPI says the reason for the range in amounts is simple, explaining, "Rebates will be based on what policyholders paid during the 2019/20 insurance year. On average, this is expected to be around 11%, or between $140 to $160, per average policyholder."

When COVID-19 started affecting the province and people were urged to stay at home, it meant less drivers on the road, resulting in less accidents. With fewer claims in to MPI, they are able to give a rebate.

In April they announced that a total of $110 million would be going back into drivers pockets, to financially help those impacted by the virus and social distancing measures. For many Manitobans, this meant either working from home or being let go from their job.

All cheques are scheduled to be mailed out by the end of today, although MPI says it could take up to four weeks for these to reach all drivers.

The only case where a driver of an insured vehicle wouldn't receive a cheque is if the rebate amount is less than $10. Then the amount will be added to their MPI account for the following year.
