A big announcement is expected from the Trudeau government today regarding single-use plastics.

Many national media outlets have reported that the government will announce that many plastics such as straws, cotton swabs, drink stirrers, and cutlery, will be banned as soon as 2021.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna is expected to make the announcement on Monday.

Millions of tons of plastic waste -- such as drinking straws, food wrapping, and water bottles -- are ending up in landfills and are blowing into waterways and oceans each year.

One official says with the longest coastline in the world, Canada has an important role to play internationally.

Last June at the G7 conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the Ocean Plastics Charter. The agreement between Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K. and the European Union is focussed on finding ways to deal with marine plastics litter.
