Drivers were in for a surprise Wednesday morning in Winnipeg as gas prices shot up over 13 cents per litre.

Gas prices were actually expected to decrease this week throughout Winnipeg. In fact they had dropped nearly four cents a litre in the past few days, before the quick climb.

"There has been a dramatic turn of events," Dan McTeague from GasBuddy.com said today. "About a 25 cent per gallon increase on the Chicago Spot Market."

McTeague said there may be a decline in supply, which is bringing gasoline prices up with it. 102.9 cents a litre looks like the new normal, he said.

Winnipeg is still below the national price average of 106.1 cents a litre.

"This is a bit of a suprise increase," McTeague said. "On April 15, we transition to summer gasoline, which could add another two to three cents a litre."

McTeague thinks we will see a three or four cent decrease heading into the weekend, but we can expect a dollar per litre as the new normal until April 15, when 103.9 to 110.9 cents per litre may be more likely.
