He entered a contest on a whim and it led to a career that's already spanned a decade.

In 2010 Mike Thom heard about a contest running on CHVN. The contest? Who Wants To Be A Radio DJ?

Working as a youth pastor at the time, as well as studying for an M.Div., Thom says he had long been praying for a chance to combine his theological training and passion for Jesus, with his love of radio.

"I had worked in broadcasting for a while in my early 20s," Thom says. "I went to broadcasting school in Winnipeg and then from there worked at a radio station in The Pas for a couple of years." After moving back south, Thom continued to explore broadcasting by running an internet radio station as well as a music promotions company that helped prairie brands get radio and press exposure.

In June 2006 Thom had what he says can only be described as a "personal encounter with Jesus," after struggling for years with drug abuse and addiction. Two months after that encounter he was sitting in a classroom at Providence University College, enrolled in the Youth Leadership program and minoring in Biblical and Theological Studies.

By the time the CHVN promotion rolled around, he was working at Willowlake Baptist Church in Winnipeg as their youth worker for three years already. "I had literally been praying, 'Lord, how do I combine these passions of reaching people for Jesus, and radio?' when the contest was announced," he says.

At the end of the contest, two winners would be declared: Rob Wiebe, who would host the CHVN morning show for a time, and Mike Thom, who began by co-hosting the morning show at then-sister station Ignite 107.

He also became known as the "That's it, that's all guy" after using the phrase to sign off on traffic reports every morning on CHVN.

In December of 2016, Thom would come to CHVN fulltime, taking over as the station's Program Director. At that point he had been at Willowlake for nine years, eventually becoming their Associate Pastor, and then Lead Pastor for over two years.

Today he still loves to preach the Good News, and when there isn't a pandemic going on can often be found speaking at churches and youth events.
