A burst pipe yesterday has meant a big headache for the Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS).

The shelter suffered "major flooding" yesterday, and crews were left to hurriedly move animals to safety.

WHS stressed in an email to donors that all the animals are safe. The same, however, can't be said for a number of computers and the gift shop.

"At least eight computers sustained water damage and need to be replaced quickly as these are used to help with animals adoptions and education," the shelter said.

The extent of the damage isn't fully known yet, but the shelter will be closed until at least Wednesday.

Firefighters and volunteers helped with moving animals to safety, and clearing the building of the water - something the WHS was very thankful for.

The WHS says they also had to purchase three car-fulls of water so that they could sanitize the animals and building.

For the shelter, perhaps most concerning was the stress levels of animals. WHS says that stress levels understandably increased in the animals as they were moved quickly from their rooms.

"We are currently assessing the stress levels of all the animals affected and we promise you that they will receive the extra attention needed to recover," WHS said in their email to donors.
