A large fire on Elgin Ave. in the early morning hours of Saturday left one firefighter with minor injuries, while the home suffered significant damage.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) says they were called to a fire in a vacant two-storey home in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue shortly after midnight on Saturday.

"Once on scene, crews found a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames. An interior, offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 1:49 a.m. The building suffered significant fire, smoke and water damage."

Firefighters conducted a search of the building and did not locate any occupants, according to a release.

The WFPS says that the injured firefighter was given an assessment and treatment by WFPS Paramedics on the scene, but transport to the hospital was not required. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
