Winnipeg fire crews are busy Sunday morning battling a large fire in a lumber yard on Logan Avenue.

The blaze broke out at 1:36 a.m. at Anco Lumber in the 900 block of Logan Avenue. A second alarm was called due to the fire's size and scale, allowing more crews to attend the scene.

Large plumes of smoke can be seen from across the city. Nearby residents are encouraged to close their windows to protect themselves from poor air quality.

Six homes on Alexander Avenue are temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Two Winnipeg Transit buses are at the scene providing temporary shelter for evacuated residents.

Firefighters are attacking the fire from outside using aerial ladders and hand-held hose lines. Crews are expected to be at the scene throughout the day.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

Logan Avenue and Alexander Avenue between Arlington Street and McPhillips Street are closed. Pedestrians and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
