An inner city church sustained significant damage following an overnight blaze.

The fire broke out at around 10:30pm Wednesday at St. Matthews Anglican Church, also known as The West End Commons.

It's believed the fire started in a garbage bin located beside the church before spreading to an exterior wall.

The large church, located on the corner of St. Matthews Avenue and Maryland Street is currently undergoing renovations to be transformed into affordable housing. It is very close to being completed.

It's unclear at this time as to whether or not this fire will slow down construction.

Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
