Five people remain in hospital in critical or serious condition and one has died after a serious fatal vehicle car collision early Saturday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officer with the traffic unit was near Salter Street and Boyd Avenue when the officers saw a vehicle in the area and tried to initiate a traffic stop.

The vehicle saw the officers' vehicle and sped away.

Nearly immediately after taking off, police say the fleeing vehicle hit a second vehicle at the intersection at Andrews street and Boyd Avenue.

The collision occurred two blocks away from where it first fled.

Four people in the vehicle that was struck, including a baby and a child, were taken to hospital. Two more from the fleeing vehicle were also transported to hospital. Most of these six people were in critical or serious condition.

A woman who was in the vehicle that was struck has died from her injuries.

WPS say the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has been notified and taken over the investigation.

More information to come.
