Intead of getting rid of your unwanted items around the house, why not give someone else a chance to make use of them?  It's the annual fall curbside giveaway weekend throughout Winnipeg.

Darryl Drohomerski, manager of solid waste services for the city of Winnipeg has some tips:

Here's what you do:
Place unwanted, reusable household items at the curb on your front street. Label each item with a "FREE" sticker or sign and keep any items safely stored away that you don't want to give away.  All you need to do is make sure the curb is clear by dusk on Sunday

Here's few ideas of items that can be given away:
-Books, CDs, DVDs
-Furniture, electronics, artwork, mirrors
-Sports equipment, toys
-Yard and gardening tools and equipment
-Small appliances, kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans
-Construction material and clothing

Things to avoid on the curb:
-Items that could potentially harbour bed bugs like mattresses and bedding
-You can visit the Consumer Product Safety Bureau to find out about items that aren't safe to give away

It's meant to be a fun time to grab items that may be of use to you but there is a bit of etiquette to follow this weekend.

-Take only the items at the curb marked "FREE".
-Check all items closely for bed bugs before you put them in your vehicle or bring them into your home.
-Respect other people's property – don't walk or drive on people's lawns or gardens.
-Giveaway items should still be in good condition.
-Don't discard any items on another person's lawn.
-Obey the traffic laws at all times (don't block traffic, park illegally or block people's driveways with your vehicle) and watch out for children.

If you do have leftover items after the weekend, there are options of dropping items off at thrift stores, goodwill stores or local community groups.
