Bundle up and plug in your vehicles as Winnipeg is under an extreme cold warning Wednesday evening and night.

As of 3:30 p.m Wednesday afternoon, Winnipeg as well as most of Manitoba is under an extreme cold warning.

"We had that system that brought the snow and blowing snow yesterday move out of the region and in behind that system we have that cold air mass that is descending down from the north," says Justin from Environment Canada.

According to Environment Canada, cold, arctic air has spread over the Prairies as a ridge of high-pressure tracks through the region.

Overnight lows are expected to be around -30 degrees combined with winds up to 15 km/h will produce extreme wind chill values near -40 tonight.

These extreme wind chill values will moderate Thursday morning with an expected high of -18.

"We will get a relatively immediate reprieve from this. We'll see those temperatures rise warmer than we've seen in the last day or two to -5 but with it, we're going to see another system with snow, wind, and blowing snow and then back into the weekend we'll see colder temperatures once again."

If people must go out, it's best to dress in layers and take along warm clothes in the vehicle, and an emergency kit, in case of a breakdown.
