A church building in Georgia is a heap of rubble following a devastating fire, but its pastor and congregants are still giving praise to God.

The congregation of Douglas Christian Fellowship Church of God in Douglas, Georgia, was having an evening worship service this past Wednesday when a member noticed some smoke.

As the service was being live-streamed, people watching from home could see that shortly after the flames and smoke began, everyone evacuated quickly. Thankfully no one was hurt as the building became engulfed in flames.

The Connections podcast: real life, real faith

"My thoughts and prayers are with the church pastor and family and all the church congregation," says Eunice Carter, one of the church members who was watching the Wednesday service online

With no building left standing, yesterday the congregation met in the parking lot for a quick outdoor Sunday service.

"It's just wonderful how God works," says the pastor during the service. "We're blessed and highly favoured, that's all I can say."

He mentioned that the congregation will continue to gather for all of its services and Bible studies at a nearby sanctuary. Other people and organizations have helped in different ways.

"Chick-fil-A from Douglas stepped up, blessed us with breakfast, and prayed over us," says the pastor. "Individuals would just pop up, total random strangers. To give you an example, last night a stranger walked up and prayed over us."

The cause of the fire is under investigation and has still not been determined.
