As of Sunday morning residents of Red Lake, Ont., are welcome to return to their homes.

Following a week-long forest fire, which reached 552 hectares that demanded the evacuation of the town of 4,100 people, the Municipality of Red Lake released the news to its residents Saturday evening.

"As noted in previous communications, the fire (RED049) which had threatened our community is considered to be 100% contained and does not pose a threat to our Municipality," the release says.

The Municipality says that the fire took out some communication infrastructure in the area. That means residents will now be without 9-1-1 services, among others. Natural gas customers are also without gas, and may be without for up to another five days.

The municipality also says "it will take some time for community to get back to some level of normalcy."

The local hospital is able to only provide emergency services at this time, as well.

“These have been very difficult times for all of us. I cannot express enough how important it is for our residents to take their time, abide by the Provincial mandated speed limits, and travel with caution as you make your way back to your homes," says Red Lake Mayor, Fred Mota.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry had listed Red Lake fire 49 as being held under control.

Red Lake is 255 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, and 90 kilometres east of the Manitoba border.
