Emergency services workers know the need for blood is real, so they will be donating their blood as part of a month long campaign.

Sirens for Life started yesterday and will see members of the Winnipeg Police Service, RCMP, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, STARS Air Ambulance, and Manitoba Corrections to donate blood during the summer months.

"In addition to our own contributions through our agencies, we also call to the public to join us in this campaign to increase blood donations through the summer," Tammy Skrabek, WPS Public Information Officer said.

The need for blood increases during the summer months and Skrabek describes this as an opportunity to raise awareness.

"A lot of people are away on holidays," Skrabek said. "It's just a busy time.

The WPS has increased their goal this year from 150 units of blood up to 300 units of blood. The goal is to save lives and this campaign not only brings blood donations, but promotes from healthy competition between the agencies.

One patient with internal bleeding may need up to eight blood donors to help save their life. If you want to donate blood, head to Blood Services, call, or book online. Mention that you are a part of Sirens for Life and pick the agency you want to support.

The Sirens for Life campaign runs from now until August 5, 2017.
