Special Olympics Manitoba felt supported at their annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) event.

Darren Anderson, Manager of LETR says, "The Law Enforcement Torch Run is actually a worldwide movement started in 1981, spreading to Manitoba in 1988. Since then it has been the main fundraising and awareness vehicle for Special Olympic Manitoba. To date, it has raised just under 3.8 million dollars."

On June 3, over 50 police and correctional officers took part in the LETR alongside local Special Olympic athletes.

Even though the weather was not optimal, Anderson says he still considers the run a success. "We had such strong support from the Winnipeg Police this year in organizing it and getting the word out to the media. That's what it is all about: raising the awareness for the Special Olympics as a whole"

At the event, Jennifer Campbell, CEO of Special Olympics Manitoba, thanked all those in attendance and said, "This group of [Special Olympic] athletes represents the over 1,800 athletes that we have participating across the province. They truly support all of the support from all of us here today. So, thank you for hanging in here with us."

Special Olympics Awareness Week is next week, June 10-14, 2019.
