Walk or roll while raising awareness for our own unique abilities at the first ever Walk 'n Roll event.

This weekend you can participate in a unique walk, where nothing is being fundraised, and the awareness is for your own abilities.

The DASCH Foundation is hosting the first ever Abilities Awareness 5K Walk 'n Roll this Saturday, May 13 at 11:30 a.m. The walk starts at The Forks, goes through downtown Winnipeg, then ends up back at The Forks, where you will be met by Bold As Lions and Fred Penner.

"We're just celebrating our abilities," explained Susanne Williams, the Director of Development. "As people, we all have different abilities. Some of us can sing, some of us can't sing. Some of us can run, some of us can't run so well.

"We all have different things we are good at, so instead of focusing on the negative things, such as having a disability, we're focusing on the abilities that we do have."

The guests-of-honor are the Gandee family. Hunter Gandee, a 16-year-old from Michigan, recently completed an 111-mile walk. One it's own, that's pretty impressive. But he did that entire walk with his 9-year-old brother, who has Cerebral Palsy, strapped to his back. The family started an organization called The Cerebral Palsy Swagger to raise awareness for the disorder.

"They're an inspiration to us, just to do a selfless act like that to bring awareness to inclusion, cerebral palsey, people with different abilities or different disabilities," said Williams.

Cerebral Palsy is described as the loss or impairment of motor function caused by brain damage.

"We're honouring them for all the good work that they've done, and using their story to inspire our own," Williams commented.
