People who want to get rid of unwanted couches, sports equipment, or appliances may just be the treasure someone else is looking for.

After taking last year off, the City of Winnipeg is bringing back the curbside giveaway for its citizens.

"We made the decision last year, obviously we were in a much different place a year ago than we are today, to not have the event, in light of all the COVID restrictions in place," says Michael Gordichuk, the manager of Solid Waste Services for the city of Winnipeg.

At this time, the city believes it to be a safe event once more for the public.

"In light of the current restrictions/recommendations, that's more or less where we're at right now. It's more recommended rather than a restriction. There tend to be interactions with residents when they're at the locations where the free items are being presented," he says.

On September 11 and 12, any Winnipeg resident who wants to get rid of items that are reusable can put them on the curb outside of their house with something to indicate to the public that it's a free item.

"Keep any items safely stored away that you don't want taken away. Mark any item you do want to give away with a 'FREE' label on it so it clearly identifies that you're offering it up to someone else."

Any items left on the curb at the end of the day on September 12 should then be removed.
