Residents of a St. John's home are recovering after a kitchen mishap created a fire.
Late Friday morning, smoke seeped out of a two-storey duplex in the 300 block of Salter Street. Arriving at 11:02 a.m., Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews began launching an offensive attack.
WFPS says the home's occupants had self-evacuated before crews arrived and are uninjured.
Thirty-five minutes later, crews declared the fire under control.
After initial investigations, WFPS says the fire was caused by unattended cooking.
WFPS is asking Winnipeggers to:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time.
- Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
- Oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.
WFPS says there are no damage estimates currently available.
