After 40-plus years of ministry in Winnipeg, Youth for Christ Winnipeg's Executive Director, John Courtney, has announced his upcoming retirement.

YFC and its Board of Directors Confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Courtney has informed them of his intention to step down from his role effective December 31, 2019.

“I believe that YFC is now poised to enter an exciting new chapter in its history and that its best days are ahead and that the mission and ministry of Youth for Christ will continue to thrive," Courtney said.

"I am committed to working with the Board for a smooth transition and will continue to serve as ED during the recruitment process. I’ve been blessed to work with amazing staff, a committed Board of Directors and a strong senior leadership team. Our programming, administration and financial management are all in good standing. I believe that now is the time to secure YFC Winnipeg’s future by making room for new leadership in a way that allows for a smooth transition for all involved."

In a post made to YFC's social media, Courtney said "In a few short months I will be turning 72, and while I feel much younger, I know in my heart that it is time to begin the process of passing the baton to the next person whom God would have lead YFC into the next decade."

Youth For Christ said in a release that "Over the past 40+ years, John has created a culture of service, community, and innovation within YFC Winnipeg, the youth ministry community, the church community and our community partners. We are so grateful for his tireless efforts in growing YFC Winnipeg to what it is today."

"John has developed and led a committed team, each of whom plays an integral role in the everyday running of the programs of our successful not-for-profit organization,” said Robert Reimer, Chair of the Board of Directors. “We will miss John but he leaves YFC Winnipeg in a very strong position for the future and we sincerely thank him for his vision, leadership and commitment."

The YFC board has formed a succession committee to find the ministry's next Executive Director.
