Police say a father was injured after he and his family were threatened on the street.

On Wednesday evening, a man and a woman were walking in the area of Portage Avenue and Main Street, pushing their young child in a stroller, when they were approached by a man.

The man, holding a hatchet, confronted them, demanding money. The suspect then used the blunt side of the hatchet, striking the father, and demanded money once again. Unsuccessful, the suspect fled, leaving the mother and child unharmed.

A nearby witness flagged down Winnipeg Police Service officers at 6:30 p.m. Officers saw the 32-year-old suspect fleeing and used a Taser to stop him.

The father declined medical care for his minor injuries.

The suspect is facing two counts of Robbery, and Fail to Comply with Release Order. He is in custody.
