It was a packed house at Winnipeg's first-ever Coffee With a Cop event.
Patrol Sergeant Phil Penner says that the Coffee With a Cop days is "just a great way for us to come in and meet members of the community."
Coffee With a Cop began in California in 2011 and has since spread across North America. According to the organization, it was the "result of a brainstorming session. Members of the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day."
The crowd reflected the community well, with everyone from children to seniors present, and multiple cultures represented. Regular citizens sat in conversation with officers discussing a variety of topics, from the Jets and Bombers to community concerns.
"Any kind of event where you can get to know the community is fantastic," Penner says. "You always just wonder what the turnout will be, or how the public will receive us. But as you can see today, it's fantastic."
Penner says that the Winnipeg Police Service hopes to put on one Coffee With a Cop event a month, but no location has been announced yet for November.\
