Before walking into the Winnipeg Police Service's headquarters, an off-duty officer was attacked steps away from the building's entrance.

The WPS says before noon on Wednesday, an officer was on his way to work and passing through Millenium Library Park, which is across the street from the service's headquarters.

While making his way, he observed a man and woman in the middle of an altercation. The officer noticed the man was acting aggressively.

Without warning, the man then made a racial slur towards the officer and continued his aggressive actions. The suspect then drew his attention away from the unidentified woman and began assaulting the officer.

Through a window of the officers saw the attack, running towards the park. Continuing to be aggressive, the suspect yelled more racial slurs, threatening to kill the officers.

He was then taken into custody by the attending officers.

The 37-year-old suspect is facing three charges, including two counts of Utter Threats and Assualt.
