The Winnipeg Police Service is asking motorists to avoid the area around the Manitoba Legislative Building Friday morning, expecting serious traffic congestion during the morning rush hour.

A convoy will be rolling through the Assiniboine-Broadway area of Winnipeg Friday morning, stopping at the Manitoba Legislative Building.

"It is believed that large trucks and vehicles will arrive in a convoy and are expected to remain for some time," the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says in a statement. "Please avoid the area if possible."

A few trucks and tractors began arriving early Friday morning, and the WPS says although the protest isn't set to begin until 9 a.m., commuters should begin avoiding the area.

"Motorists are urged to avoid the area South of Portage Av, East of Osborne St, North of the Assiniboine River and West of Donald St.," the WPS says in a tweet sent out early Friday morning.

Authorities say this demonstration is in support of the convoy in Ottawa and other areas of Canada.

"Police are working with the organizers to facilitate a peaceful event which respects their right to protest, while ensuring public safety."

They expect significant traffic disruptions in the area and downtown.
