A new session of the Manitoba Legislature begins Tuesday afternoon with the reading of the Speech from the Throne.

Steinbach Progressive Conservative MLA Kelvin Goertzen says the government will outline how it will fulfill some of the promises from the election campaign this summer. He says these will include tax cuts.

"People will be interested in the removal of the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) from home insurance. There are a number of other promises regarding new schools and different legislative proposals. Those were committed over our next four years, over this term of government, so they certainly won't all appear in this Throne Speech. They have to be scheduled out. But there's no doubt that you'll see some of the commitments that were made in the last election brought into the Throne Speech."

Goertzen adds the government will continue to work towards a balanced budget, something it hopes to attain in about two years. He says there will be a nice reward for Manitobans when they get to a balanced budget.

"One of the things that was talked about during the campaign is once we balance the budget, we'll be able to start to reduce the amount of taxation on education that people see on their property taxes. That is a reward for us getting to a balanced budget, but we're a couple of years away from that yet."

Goertzen says the Throne Speech will also touch on the election promise to start planning over a ten year period and announce 20 schools over that ten-year period.

"The rational for that is, we were hearing from school divisions that is was difficult for them to plan on a year-to-year basis. They wanted to see that broader, longer-term perspective so that they could start land acquisition where they hadn't already acquired land and do the other sorts of things that they need to do to prepare for a new school. Certainly, one was announced for Steinbach. The timing of that will be determined by the Public Schools Finance Board.
