Concerns over sustainable fishing prompt review of Lake Winnipeg fisheries

Two groups are calling for an independent review of the province's Lake Winnipeg fisheries assessment program.

Pioneer Commercial Fishers of Manitoba and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs say they want the program to be brought up to international eco-certification standards.

A report says the lake's fish populations, particularly whitefish and pickerel, must be managed sustainably.

The groups say commercial fishing pumps about 90-million dollars into Manitoba's economy each year.
