Spring is just around the corner, which means a pothole may actually be around the corner. But City of Winnipeg crews are working hard to make sure those holes are fixed as soon as possible.

The rain and snow is causing slippery streets in Winnipeg, but City crews are working hard to make your drive as safe as possible.

"[The weather] has made for some slippery conditions on streets and sidewalks today," said Ken Allen, the City of Winnipeg's communications officer for the Public Works department. "City crews are out all over town putting salt down on the roadway to improve traction and sand on the sidewalks for pedestrians."

Allen says City crews are still working winter shifts, which means they are working around the clock to make sure the streets are safe to drive on. That includes fixing potholes, which have started showing up around the city. In some cases, potholes are reappearing.

"At this time of year, City crews are engaged in a wide variety of activities," Allen said. "We have our crews out patching potholes on those main routes."

The City is hoping to maintain it's steady increase in roads in new or good condition. According for an annual report, just over fourteen per cent of Winnipeg's roads are in poor condition. A street labeled as 'poor' is one that requires a major rehabilitation or a reconstruction.

Crews will be working hard as their winter shifts run into April when the spring cleanup begins. If you spot a pothole, you can call 311 to report it.
