Each month a group of Mennonite women from Winnipeg go to prison.

Wendy Dueck of the Charleswood Mennonite Church helps to coordinate a Bible study program for the women at the Women's Correctional Facility in Headingley.

In total, six ladies from the church come together and spend time with the ladies at the prison on the first Wednesday evening of every month.

The evening consists of a  Bible study and prayer time. Dueck's been volunteering there for four to five years, sharing the hope of Jesus.

"We're there to encourage the women and to simply say someone cares about you being in here because they don't get a lot of visitors," Dueck said.

Women at the prison will often share deep concerns with the group and ask for prayer. Dueck said that sometimes the study time turns into a prayer time.

The women who attend the Bible study range anywhere from four to 24 in attendance.

A lot of the women are finding hope in Christ and are interested in spiritual things.

Dueck said that many of the women are young mothers of young children.

They are typically serving time in prison because of a mistake they did often under the influence of something that was not helpful.

They are kind and caring people and are hoping to improve when they get out, according to Dueck.

Dueck said that she and the volunteers go to the prison to show the women that someone cares.

They give them encouragement and also encourage them to plug into other programs at the prison that are available to them.
