For years they gathered in a school gym to worship on Sunday mornings, with teams setting up at 5:30 a.m. each week.

There will be no more setting up and tearing down of the worship space for Oasis Community Church, however. The Winnipeg church held their first worship services in their brand new space at 940 Elmhurst Rd.

"The years as a portable [church] have been amazing, and we are glad to be done those, though," said Lead Pastor, Dustin Funk.

It was obviously an exciting moment to walk through the doors of their own building for the congregants at Oasis, and finally have a place to call "home."

"It's been a pretty cool journey," member and volunteer Chad Wiebe said. He and his wife have attended Oasis for the last seven years, and to finally be walking into their own building was exciting. "I'm preparing to be emotional in the service, for sure," Wiebe said after teaching Sunday school during the first service and moments before walking into the sanctuary for his first time.

The building and its space is one that will be used well. Every office including the Lead Pastor's was made with alternate uses in mind. "The Sunday school class I taught today was in the community pastor's office," Wiebe said.On weekends the office desks and chairs will be stored away in closets, and Sunday school classrooms and youth rooms appear in their place.

Josh Genn, one of Oasis' Elders said it was "unbelievable . . . surreal I think is the right word," to finally be coming into the space for worship.

The building is part of a bigger plan for the church, however. It's a space created "to draw people in," Music Pastor Jordan St. Cyr, said.

Pastor Dustin Funk agrees. It's a space created "for people who have never experienced church or Jesus. [That] they would come and check it out and experience how good it is to know Him."

The worship team was a CHVN Made in Manitoba all-star lineup as well, with Jordan St. Cyr and Sean Quigley playing, and rapper Scribe joining them for a special opening number.
