A shooting inside a Salmon Arm, BC, church building Sunday morning has left one man dead according to his family.

Family members say that 78-year-old Gordon Parmenter was shot and killed by a man armed with a rifle, according to South Okanagan Global News.

Parmenter's son, Dave Parmenter, told the news agency that his father was an elder at the Salmon Arm Church of Christ. He told reporters that his father was specifically targetted by the alleged shooter.

The two were known to each other and Dave described the suspect as struggling with mental health issues.

An air ambulance arrived to take another person injured in the shooting to hospital.

The suspect was detained by congregants when he returned a second time, targetting Parmenter again. He is now in police custody.
