A man in Winnipeg faces multiple firearms charges as well as assaulting a peace officer after police say one of their officers was briefly dragged while trying to stop a suspected stolen vehicle.

Police say the officer was speaking to the driver Saturday when the man put the vehicle in gear and the officer got caught in the car door.

She was dragged approximately two metres before falling to the roadway.

Additional police units responded and were able to stop the fleeing vehicle, and after a brief foot pursuit, they arrested the driver and a female passenger.

Police say they found a sawed-off rifle in the car.

The officer was treated in hospital and later released.
