A school in Winnipeg named after a man whose ideas laid the groundwork for racist apartheid policies in South Africa is getting a new name.

Winnipeg School Division trustees have voted that Cecil Rhodes School will be known as something else.

A committee will be created to start consultations on a new name that is expected to be approved by September 2022.

More than 1,700 people signed a petition launched by a teacher last June amid protests against anti-Black racism and global campaigns to tear down landmarks whose namesakes held racist beliefs during their lifetimes.
