For many kids, summer camp is a source of unforgettable memories, and this season’s high temperatures have many camps coming up with memorable ways to beat the heat.

Though the weather has not been particularly hot the last few days, Head of Roseau River Bible Camp, Duane Goertzen, explains his staff have noticed the largely warm weather this year and have taken some creative approaches to it. “One idea that our programmer had was to do soccer-baseball, but the bases were kiddie pools and there were slip-n-slides between the bases to run on.” He adds that the camp also has a fire-hose which is often used to cool campers as they run by.

Kyle Sheppard, Director of Bird River Bible Camp, notes that the weather has not really been an issue for his camp either. “We’ve had a few warmer days and then we increase water opportunities for the kiddos to take part in; lots of river activities so they can jump into the water and cool down.”

Goertzen says he is thankful there have been no serious cases of sun-stroke or dehydration yet this summer. He suggests his staff have been careful in making sure kids stay hydrated and in the shade on warmer days, noting their diligence has prevented almost any heat-related illness so far this season.

Both Directors claim this summer of camp is off to a fantastic start. They each say they look forward to the new memories and events the coming weeks will bring.
