Two fires Saturday evening made for a busy weekend for Winnipeg firefighters.

The two additional blazes were the fourth and fifth fires of the weekend.

At 6:41 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire in the 200 block of Hampton Street.

Smoke and flames were coming from the two-storey, single family home when crews arrived.

WFPS launched an offensive attack but were forced to exit the structure and revert to a defensive attack under the worsening conditions of the fire. They re-entered the house again after conditions improved and declared the fire under control just after 8 p.m.

All occupants of the home safely self-evacuated and no injuries were reported.

A second fire happened later in the hour in the 300 block of College Avenue.

Just before 7 p.m., crews were called to the blaze in a three-storey, multi-family home.

The inside of the building was smoky when crews arrived. Using an offensive attack, the fire was declared under control just after 8 p.m.

WFPS says most occupants of the structure safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters assisted one person in leaving the home.

No injuries were reported.

Investigations into the causes of both fires are ongoing.

Drivers near these areas are asked to use caution due to icy conditions from the water used to fight the fire, which has frozen over due to Winnipeg's extremely cold temperatures.

City crews are monitoring the roads and applying sand and de-icing agents as necessary.
