A man is in custody after his flight from police caused an early morning collision that snarled rush-hour traffic Thursday and sent an innocent woman to hospital.
The Winnipeg Police Service says members on patrol in the Exchange District noticed a vehicle being driven erratically around 4:30 a.m.
Officers attempted to pull over the driver who fled instead. Police say in a release that almost immediately the vehicle was involved in a collision at the corner of Bannatyne Avenue and Princess Street.
The suspect then fled on foot but was captured quickly by officers.
An adult woman who was driving the other vehicle was taken to hospital in stable condition.
A 29-year-old male from Winnipeg has been arrested and charged with a number of offences including impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight while pursued by a peace officer, as well as a number of weapons-related charges.
A stretch of Princess Street and Bannatyne Avenue was closed through the morning rush hour while police investigated. Both roads have since reopened.
