Winnipeggers will be showing off their dedication to outdoor dining this winter.

Last winter, Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman announced they would be allowing temporary patios to open in the winter but that did not pan out as case numbers rose. This year, he's hoping to finally see that become a reality.

"The winter temporary patio program is one way the City is working with the industry to try and create opportunities to increase business and welcome back customers," Bowman says in a statement. "It’s our hope this year that we will see many residents supporting our restaurants and enjoying their patios from November to March."

Bowman and Cindy Gilroy, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development, Heritage and Downtown Development are acknowledging the hard work of restaurant owners who have been assuring their customers have a safe experience.

"I am hopeful this winter patio program will help create more opportunities to increase business in a way that complies with current public health restrictions and offers a unique and enticing experience for customers," Gilroy says.

The temporary winter patios would need permitted heating sources, size and material restrictions for tents or shelters, and have requirements for snow removal. Registration is now open for businesses to apply for the new patios.

Currently, there are 113 restaurants and taprooms that have a temporary patio registered with the city on top of the regular patios, a testament to the city's love of patios.
