Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman is calling for a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister to discuss what he says is a crisis of violence in the city.

Bowman says the three levels of government need to coordinate resources to make a meaningful difference in addressing the root causes of crime.

He says that includes a lack of resources to help those with addictions, mental health issues and families in crisis.

"We can discuss how we can better work together to build a healthier community to deal with the root causes of crime that we are seeing, specifically relating to the homicides that we are witnessing over the last week," Bowman says.

Const. Rob Carver from the Winnipeg Police Service says the city has seen 11 homicides in the past 30 days, including the fatal stabbing of a three-year-old boy asleep in his bed.

"This is unprecedented for us as a police service, as a city," Carver says.

Bowman says that he knows there is no "magic wand" that can be used, but that all levels of government need to work together and share resources.

Day of Prayer

CHVN 95.1 FM will be holding a day of prayer for the City of Winnipeg on Friday, November 8.

We'll be joined throughout the day by pastors, ministry leaders, and musicians. We'll pray together, we'll talk together, we'll sing together, we'll confess and repent together. And together we will declare that God is the God of this city. Find out more info here.

How you can participate:

  • The first is obvious: listen and pray. We'll begin at 6:30 a.m. and continue with a different guest each hour.

  • You can record short voice memos on your phone with your own prayer and email them to dj@chvnradio.com (try and keep prayers under 30 seconds)

  • You can call and leave a message with your prayer, a verse that you want to share, or stories of hope. Call 1.877.951.2486

  • Again, please share and spread the word. We can literally gather hundreds of thousands of people throughout Manitoba on Friday and pray together.
