Elizabeth (Betty) Schroeder
March 6, 1929 – April 2, 2024

Betty was born to immigrant parents Peter and Anganetha Enns at Lena, Manitoba on March 6, 1929. Betty was born into a family that had 5 living children from her father’s previous marriage and sadly there had been 4 infant deaths, as a result she was the 10th child born to this family.

The family initially lived on a farm immediately next to the United States Border and after a while they moved to another farm that had more acreage that was also close to the USA Border.
Betty’s father, passed away tragically on March 14, 1940, in Brandon, MB from an infection, Betty was 11 years old at the time. Sadly, this left her mother Anganetha alone to raise 8 children. An older brother had to leave school and a sister had to give up her job in order to assist in taking care of the children and work on the farm. While living here the children attended the Plum Hollow School. They lived on this farm until 1945 and at that time decided to move to Grunthal, MB. Anganetha and 6 of the children moved with her, the older 4 children who were already married, did not move with them. Anganetha had several siblings living in the Grunthal community.

The family lived on a small acreage north of Grunthal and raised cows, chickens, and pigs to support the family. They also had a large garden. While the family lived here, the children finished their schooling at the Gravelridge School. When the time came that the children were finished school, they decided to move to Winnipeg and bought a house on Neil Ave. Five of the children moved to Winnipeg with their mother. This made it easier for the children to get a job. The mother, Anganetha, passed away in September 1950. Several years later Betty bought a different house where she lived until she married Cornelius Schroeder on June 27, 1970. Cornie and Betty owned a number of other homes together until Cornie got ill and moved to a Care Home. Betty then moved to an apartment on Henderson Hwy. and eventually moved to Irene Baron Eden Centre an Assisted Living Residence on Molson Ave. This was next to the care home where Cornie lived. Cornie passed away on January 27, 2014.

After Betty’s health started failing, she was transferred to the River East Care Home and lived there until March 13, 2024, when she was transferred to Resthaven Personal Care Home in Steinbach. She passed away on Tuesday April 2, 2024. She leaves to mourn her passing, her sister, Helen, numerous in-laws: Eleanor Enns, Tina Bergen, Mary Schroeder, Hanna Rempel, Jake and Mary Schroeder, and Peter Schroeder, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Helen’s husband, 5 sisters and their spouses and 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law, 2 infant brothers, 2 infant sisters and her parents, Peter and Anganetha Enns. There will be a memorial service for Betty on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street.
