One person is in critical condition after an early-morning fire in East Elmwood.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service received multiple reports of a fire in the 700 block of Beach Avenue Monday morning. Arriving at 6:49 a.m., crews arriving on the scene discovered heavy smoke escaping from the single-family bungalow.

The home's lone occupant had self-evacuated before crews arrived and was assessed by on-scene paramedics for their health concerns. Paramedics then transported the resident to the hospital in critical condition where they remain.

Launching an offensive attack crews extinguished the fire by 7:35 a.m. At the scene, they found a dead dog.

Crews are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
