The Winnipeg Police Service says a man is numerous charges after what they believe was a drug-driven event.

Late Friday night, the WPS received a 911 call indicating that a woman was being held hostage by an adult family member on methamphetamine. When police arrived at the 1500 block of Lincoln Avenue, they say they observed a man acting erratically, displaying signs of methamphetamine use.

At this time, authorities learned he had several outstanding warrants.

"While attempting to arrest him and place him in handcuffs, the suspect became combative and tried to remove an officer’s conductive energy weapon from his holster but was unsuccessful," the WPS says in a statement.

Officers attempted to use the energy weapon but it was unsuccessful. The suspect then escaped, running barefoot outside into the cold.

The suspect then jumped into the officer's unlocked cruiser, trying to steal it, but was unsuccessful. Running back into the cold, the man went to the 1400 block of Selkirk Avenue, where officers found and arrested him.

The suspect is facing the following charges:

  • Disarming a Peace Officer
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Escape Lawful Custody
  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release x 3
  • Five warrants related to failing to attend court and breaching court orders

The man was given a medical evaluation and remains in custody.
