Temperatures are beginning to drop, and wind chills overnight are expected to reach -40 or colder in several areas throughout Manitoba.

In southern Manitoba, warnings have been issued for the City of Winnipeg, the Interlake, Central Plains, Pembina Valley and the southeast.

Overnight lows are expected to dip down to -30 in the City of Winnipeg and in most other regions affected by the warnings.

Environment Canada says that temperatures should begin to moderate tomorrow morning. Cloud cover is expected to move into the region throughout Sunday, and temperatures will climb to -16 for a high, and a wind chill around -22 in the afternoon. Another 2 to 4cm of snow is also expected throughout the day.

Temperatures will remain below the seasonal average of -13 for a high and -23 for a low through Tuesday. A warm front on Wednesday is currently forecasted for a high of -2.

Warnings have also been issued in northern Manitoba where wind chills of -45 are expected Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Temperatures will only moderate somewhat on Sunday and the extreme cold is expected to envelop the north for at least a few more days.

Environment Canada's warning reminds residents that extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
