Police say a man is in custody after a toddler he was caring for was injured, needing care from a hospital.

The Winnipeg Police Service says on July 31, a family member in a separate suite within the home began to hear a three-year-old cry. When they entered the suite, they saw the 26-year-old family member flee the home, leaving the child injured.

The child was taken to the hospital in stable condition and Child Investigations Unit began investigating.

A warrant was issued for the suspect who was trying to evade the police.

On Saturday, the suspect was located and taken into custody.

The 26-year-old is now facing charges including Assault with a Weapon and three counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Undertaking. He was also given a new charge of Possession of a Weapon.

He is in custody.
