The Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg says it has euthanized a cougar that lived at the facility since 2004.

The zoo says in a statement that Max was more than 16 years old and was loved by his care team, but veterinarians made their decision based on a quality-of-life assessment.

The statement says for several years Max received specialized care for kidney failure and arthritis, and more recently was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and diabetes.

It says all are common conditions in elderly cats but cumulatively they were starting to take a toll.

The average lifespan of a cougar is eight to 13 years.
