A young woman is in police custody following an early morning carjacking in a shopping mall parking lot.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that they were called just after 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday to the Polo Park Shopping Centre.

Police say that a security officer responsible for the shopping centre was operating a marked security vehicle during his patrol when a woman jumped on the hood of the vehicle while the guard was making his rounds.

The suspect allegedly opened the vehicle's passenger door and entered the car. The guard exited the running vehicle and attended to the passenger side of the vehicle in an attempt to remove the suspect. The suspect shoved the victim to the ground, mounted the vehicle’s driver’s side, and drove away. As the suspect fled the scene, the vehicle struck the victim’s arm, causing minor injury.

The vehicle was tracked using its GPS, and responding North District officers located the vehicle operated by the suspect in the North End of the city. Officers safely stopped the vehicle at McGregor Street and Mountain Avenue and placed the suspect in custody.

A 21-year-old female of Winnipeg is facing charges of robbery, possession of a scheduled substance (methamphetamine), and dangerous operation of a conveyance.

She remains in police custody, with her disposition pending.
