Heat and humidity is bringing the possibility of severe thunderstorms to southeast Manitoba. Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch across southeast Manitoba:

A very warm and humid airmass continues to give above seasonal temperatures to southern Manitoba. It will remain hot and humid today with temperatures quickly climbing back towards the 30C mark with humidex values in the in the 36-38 range. A cold front will sweep southwards through the Red River Valley this afternoon, bringing with it a risk of thunderstorms.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for:

  • City of Winnipeg, Man.
  • Bissett - Victoria Beach - Nopiming Prov. Park - Pine Falls
  • Selkirk - Gimli - Stonewall - Woodlands, Man.
  • Portage la Prairie - Headingley - Brunkild - Carman, Man.
  • Dugald - Beausejour - Grand Beach, Man.
  • Morden - Winkler - Altona - Morris, Man.
  • Steinbach - St. Adolphe - Emerson - Vita - Richer, Man.
  • Whiteshell - Lac du Bonnet - Pinawa, Man.
  • Sprague - Northwest Angle Provincial Forest, Man.

The hot and muggy weather has also prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement for the fourth day in a row:

Behind the cold front, relief from the heat will occur as cooler, less humid air moves in. These cooler temperatures will move into the region for the remainder of the week.

Although temperatures and humidex values are expected to remain just below heat warning criteria for southern Manitoba, it is important to remember that heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

With the 50th Canada Summer Games ongoing, it is important to keep hydrated and go into the shade or a cool place when able to do so.
