Winnipeg and much of eastern Manitoba are under a blanket of ice again this morning after freezing rain fell overnight.

Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for much of southeastern Manitoba shortly after midnight. Temperatures hovered around zero degrees overnight while rain and freezing rain fell.

While the system has already moved out of the area, temperatures are expected to drop throughout the morning, potentially compounding already icy conditions.

The City of Winnipeg says they are currently salting priority one streets to help improve traction. They say that they are also salting bridges and overpasses as required, and monitoring bus routes and residential streets.

Highways in eastern Manitoba vary from ice-covered to bare and in good shape for winter driving. Highways south of Winnipeg, like the 75 and 59, are partly ice covered as of 5:45 a.m.
