Multiple sellers have reported being barred from advertising on retail site Amazon due to their faith-based products.

According to Faithwire, Amazon told sellers that their ads would be blocked because of a new policy update which prohibited any ads containing or expressing "religious content."

Multiple sellers have experienced their ads being removed from the Amazon website over the past few months. In one email, an Amazon representative informed a seller that "products related to a specific religion are not allowed to be advertised," CNBC reported.

Amazon has commented on the situation, saying that no such new policy exists and that responsibility for the confusion relied on staff error.

One spokesperson said: "The email that CNBC viewed contains inaccurate information and our long-standing policies have not changed. Corrective training is being provided to the relevant teams."

The inadvertent sales snub by the dominating online retailer, however, has not been without consequences. Revenue loss has apparently been one result of the advertising mix-up.

Amazon maintains that the only faith-related ads it prohibits include those that advocate or demean a religion.
