After Winnipeg Police handed out its first post-legalization ticket for consuming cannabis in a vehicle, Manitoba RCMP now say they’ve pulled over someone for driving high.

RCMP say officers from the Thompson detachment had set up a checkstop overnight when they noticed an SUV abruptly turn away from them. Police say an officer stopped the vehicle and smelled cannabis, as well as signs of impairment in the driver. According to police, the driver, a 20-year-old man from Thompson, admitted to using cannabis. A Standardized Field Sobriety Test was done and a blood demand was made (blood was taken by a licenced technician at the nearest medical facility).

Charges cannot be laid until the results from the blood test come in. The man’s licence has been suspended.

Earlier this week, prior to legalization, Winnipeg Police Traffic Division Inspector Gord Spado said there have been people driving high for years; he said he wasn’t expecting an influx of stoned drivers after recreational cannabis became legal.
