The Director of Hunger and Poverty Awareness at Winnipeg Harvest is remembering a longtime volunteer as a person from which he learned a tremendous amount.

Dave Mouland passed away on Saturday at age 67.

Donald Benham says Mouland was a big part of his life, and a constant volunteer at Winnipeg Harvest.

"Dave was constantly remarked upon by our clients for being particularly friendly and helpful -- sometimes have a little chat with them and so on -- so he really drew attention to himself that way by being so good with people who were very much under stress."

Benham says Mouland started as a volunteer by answering phones. He later joined the hunger and poverty awareness department. According to Benham, Mouland could see the direct relationship between different living costs. Benham remembers when Mouland successfully lobbied to roll back a 20 cent increase on transit fare in Winnipeg.

"Dave came to me and David Northcott, our executive director, and said, 'You know, we've got to do something about this for our folks; that's money that comes right out of their food budget.' And we said, 'Well, okay, Dave, you go and do something about it.' And so he did. He organized a petition drive and he got people -- he got city councillors together and student associations -- and he went to city council and he wagged his finger in the face of the councillors and the mayor and what do you know, it worked. He got it turned back."

Benham says he will miss Mouland personally, and it's a great loss to Winnipeg Harvest.
