Every April 22, Earth Day is celebrated by more than 1 billion people around the world. How do you plan on marking the day? Here are some ideas!

1. Spend time outside

Go for a walk! Take the bike for a spin! Feel the sunshine and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. Consider leaving the car at home and choosing a sustainable form of transport. Reducing emissions is good for the planet and good for your health!

2. Pick up litter

What better way to honour the planet than by beautifying your neighbourhood? Grab a pair of gloves and a garbage bag and pick up discarded remnants revealed by the spring melt.

3. Consider composting

According to Earth Day Canada, 58 per cent of food is discarded somewhere along the food chain. Rather than have that waste end up in landfills, composting returns valuable nutrients to the soil to help maintain soil quality and fertility.

4. Energy efficiency

Lower your thermostat, swap to low-energy lightbulbs, stream fewer videos online. All these things can greatly reduce your environmental footprint!

5. Recycle your batteries

Batteries contain a number of heavy metals and toxic chemicals and disposing of them by the same process as regular household waste has raised concerns over soil contamination and water pollution. Learn more about why and where to recycle at: https://www.call2recycle.ca/manitoba/
